Curiosity Academy, a Community Based
Girls’ STEM Program is Recruiting

Flint, MI (9/14/15) Curiosity Academy, a community based STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts) program for girls is recruiting new students!

Students will have an exciting opportunity to explore STEM concepts through a variety of activities which supported their academic coursework and curiosity in science and related fields. Plans for this year’s program include fun topics such as:

  • Rocketry
  • Building Batteries
  • Making Catapults
  • Dissecting Owl Pellets
  • Evaluating Environmental Impacts
  • Much more!

Curiosity Academy is a collaborative community based program for 6th-8th grade girls in Genesee County.  The partnering institutions, Kettering University, Sloan Longway, and the University of Michigan-Flint worked collaboratively to form this year-long afterschool community STEM club for girls. The program aims to provide a risk free opportunity to explore STEM concepts without the pressure of grades or standardized tests and encourage females to pursue further studies in STEM fields while providing positive role models.

Curiosity Academy was developed in 2014 by:

  • Monique Wilhelm, a lecturer and the lab manager for the chemistry and biochemistry department at UM-Flint,
  • Essence Wilson, Kettering University alumnae and co-founder of Communities First, Inc.,
  • Samantha Grathoff, lab coordinator and community engagement liaison  for the chemistry and biochemistry department at UM-Flint,
  • Laurie Bone, senior curator of programs at Sloan Longway,
  • Virginia Hill, coordinator of pre-college programs at Kettering University.

The collaborative approach presents a sustainable model for youth programming as each institution brings unique experience and resources to the table.

The positive impact of the program is clear to directors, students and parents. Sonal Gupta, parent of a Curiosity Academy student, commented about her daughter “When I see her walk confidently through the halls of U of M and Kettering I feel so happy that as a Middle schooler she has the exposure that would intimidate even older kids. Everything else that she has learnt there is a bonus!!”

The program is currently recruiting students for the 2015-2016 school year.  Up to 25 girls will be accepted and the cost is $150.  Tuition assistance is available to those who need it.  For more information, please visit blogs.umflint.edu/curiosityacademy or call Samantha Grathoff at (810) 762-3277.

Dillon Newsletter

Dillon Drop off, Dismissal, and New Visitor Information

For safety reasons, when you drop your child off in the morning, please use the parent loop. There will be cones designating the area to drop your child off in. Please do NOT park in the loop. If you want to walk your child into the building, please park in the parking lot. If it is after 8:45 a.m., parents must park in the parking lot and walk your child into the office to sign them in. After 8:45 a.m. they are considered tardy and will be marked as such.

Children are not able to be signed out of school after 3:45 p.m. It is disruptive to our end of the day procedures. We appreciate your support with this so much! We start dismissing parent pick-ups at 3:54 p.m. Please make sure you are on time so your child is not left waiting in the office.

Thank you for your assistance and understanding in these matters. Our priority is always the safety of our students at Dillon Elementary.

Dillon Runs for Funds in “Color”

Parent Club would like to welcome you back to Dillon this year! Our fun and healthy “2015 Run for Funds in Color” fundraiser will take place in the afternoon of Friday, October 16. Our goal this year is to raise $7,000, that is just $25 per student. The entire school, whether you donate or not, will participate in this event as we encourage a healthy lifestyle. We encourage your family’s entire participation in this event since this is our largest fundraiser of the year. Reach out to family, friends and co-workers to ask for donations. We do not want children going door to door. As always, all money raised by Parent Club is returned to the student in various ways such as: Classroom Field Trip assistance, assemblies, Halloween Hike, Field Day, Birthday Books and Pencils.

IMPORTANT:

Please have your child wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind possible getting stained.

The runs are divided up by grade level:

  • Kindergarten at 1:15 p.m.
  • Second Grade at 1:45 p.m.
  • Third Grade at 2:15 p.m.
  • First Grade at 2:45 p.m.

The students rotated between the auditorium, the cafeteria, and they gymnasium. In the auditorium they were privileged to hear a motivational speaker, Sunjay Nath.  Sunjay was an excellent speaker and everyone really enjoyed listening to him.  www.sunjaynath.com
