C-A High School Counselor’s Corner

Soon to be Seniors!

Here at the high school, we counselors are presenting our Junior students with a “to-do” list for the summer. We are accomplishing this through our final classroom lessons for the year. This is the list of tasks that are important for Juniors to complete before returning in the Fall for their final year of high school:

*Check colleges of interest to see if you have a qualifying ACT/SAT score.

*Retake the test (s) if necessary. (www.actstudent.org)

*Enter your summer plan of action into your EDP under Career Planning Activity.

*Potential college athletes must register for the NCAA clearinghouse. (www.eligibilitycenter.org)

*Be sure to volunteer and do community service.

*Get a summer job.

*Visit colleges of interest.

Summer is a perfect time to seek out new hobbies and passions. Are you a budding shutterbug, creative writer, public speaker, painter? Check out the programs at local community colleges, universities, community centers and parks and recreation departments. If you are faithful about bringing home school papers, you’ve probably already brought home flyers about some of these programs. If not, jump online or check the newspaper for ideas. Some of these programs are pricey, but many are low or no cost at all.

Summer school or private tutoring are also options to consider. If you need a little extra help in a particular subject area, now is the time to get up to speed in that subject.  Balance work and freedom for the summertime. Fall will be here before we know it.

Camps are also a lot of fun in the summer. There are day camps at local parks, colleges and beaches. In addition, there are the old fashioned “sleep in a tent” overnight camps as well. Some are specific to activities such as, equestrian, band, sports and others are just a free choice type camping experience. Check them out.

No matter how you spend your time this summer, be sure to prepare yourselves for the next year here at C-A to continue your journey toward your high school diploma!
