CAMS Students Participate in “Tuesdays With…”

If it’s Tuesday, among GenNET participating districts in Genesee County that means it must be “Tuesdays With….” a specific career professional or specialist from any number of places in Genesee County.

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 brought to students at Carman-Ainsworth Middle School, Grand Blanc Middle School-West and Carman-Ainsworth Alternative Education Woodland School a presentation from Forensic Science expert, Ms. Dawn Holcomb.

Ms. Holcomb, also an instructor at the Genesee Area Skill Center shared with over 75 students the nature of work of a forensic scientist using the GenNET ITV, two-way interactive television systems at each building.  While students were in the room with Ms. Holcomb during the presentation, students were also LIVE () at Grand Blanc Middle School West and Carman-Ainsworth’s Woodland Alternative Education Sites.

Students were not only informed about how to plan for a career in Forensic Science, but were shown and interactive with artifacts from the field Ms. Holcomb brought with her for students to see first-hand.

The event took place during a short 60-minute “special event” opportunity for students at all sites, but as one student summarized before leaving, “This was the most useful, exciting thing I’ve learned about during the entire school year.  I can’t wait to have a career in this field.”

It is the intention and goal of the “Tuesdays With…” program that when students are able to have first-hand engaging, relevant and useful experiences in school at the middle and high school level, their future educational programs have an opportunity to fall into place naturally before moving on to post-secondary education.
